🎬 THE DIRECTOR'S CUTβ„’

ONE STORY. YOUR VISION.

You've read the book. Now you're directing the movie!

But there's a catch...

You only have THREE scenes to bring the entire story to life.

Which moments deserve to make it onto the big screen?

What would you leave out?

And how would you make your audience feel?

Welcome to The Director's Cutβ„’, a creative two-page literary activity that challenges learners to transform a novel or short story into their very own film production!

Designed for Grades 6–8, this engaging printable combines visual storytelling, literary analysis, creative thinking and decision-making.

Learners become film directors, selecting important moments from a story and deciding how to present them through camera shots, sound and cinematic storytelling.

Because a great director doesn't simply show what happens. A great director decides what matters.

🎞️ THE CHALLENGE

A film studio has hired YOU to adapt a story for the big screen.

Your mission?

Choose just THREE scenes that capture the heart of the story.

Sketch each scene, explain why it matters and make the creative decisions that will bring your film to life.

🎬 PAGE 1 β€” THE STORYBOARD

ONE STORY. THREE SCENES.

Learners select three important moments from their chosen novel or short story.

For each scene, they must:

βœ” Create a scene title

βœ” Sketch how the scene will appear on screen

βœ” Identify the moment they want to capture

βœ” Explain why they selected that particular scene

βœ” Consider how the scene contributes to the overall story

Three spacious cinematic frames provide plenty of room for creative visual storytelling.

πŸŽ₯ PAGE 2 β€” BEHIND THE SCENES

THE DIRECTOR'S DECISIONS

Now it's time to think like a real filmmaker!

For each of their three scenes, learners explore:

CAMERA

Will they use a close-up, medium shot or wide shot?

How will the camera help tell the story?

SOUND

What will the audience hear?

Dialogue? Music? Silence? Sound effects?

PURPOSE

What should the audience feel, understand or discover during this scene?

βœ‚οΈ THE SCENE YOU CUT

Which important event from the original story did you leave out?

Why didn't it make the final film?

✏️ THE MOMENT YOU CHANGED

What would you adapt or change from the original story to make it work better on screen?

🎞️ THE FINAL SHOT

What is the very last image your audience sees?

What emotion or message should it leave behind?

🚨 THE PRODUCER'S CHALLENGE

There's a problem on set!

Your film is running TEN MINUTES TOO LONG.

The producer demands that you remove one of your three scenes.

Which scene will you cut?

And more importantly...

How will you preserve the meaning of the story without it?

This final challenge encourages learners to evaluate their creative choices, prioritise essential events and consider how individual scenes contribute to a story's overall meaning.

❀️ WHY TEACHERS WILL LOVE IT

The Director's Cutβ„’ takes traditional novel study activities in a different direction.

Instead of asking learners to simply summarise a story, it challenges them to decide which moments are essential and how those moments could be communicated visually.

To complete the activity successfully, learners must understand the plot, recognise significant events, consider character development and think about the story's overall message.

The filmmaking element provides an engaging way to explore literary concepts while giving learners creative freedom.

And because the resource can be used with almost any novel or short story, it offers flexibility across different literature units.

One story. Three scenes. Endless creative possibilities.

The camera is rolling.

The decisions are yours.

ACTION!
