THE CURRICULUM

This program uses a "Watch, Learn, Do" framework. My goal is to ensure students understand the mechanics of sewing—such as seam allowances, tension, and the importance of pressing—rather than just blindly following a pattern.

  • Watch & Learn: As the teacher, you will model each technique and explain the "why" behind each step.
  • Do: Students then move into the "active" phase, practicing the skill while you monitor each stage of learning.


This scaffolding builds a foundation of technical mastery that allows students to troubleshoot their own machines and eventually design their own projects.


I designed and taught this curriculum to occur over a seven-week course, assuming one 2-hour class per week. This pace allows for a perfect balance of discussion, technical modeling, and hands-on sewing time for each project as well as gives students time to practice on their own between classes. The structure is flexible, you can arrange the frequency and length of classes that meet your needs. It could easily be extended to an 8 or 9 week class. Extension ideas are provided.

Teacher Requirements & Preparation

Prerequisites: This curriculum is designed for instructors with a foundational understanding of sewing. Because the "Watch, Learn, Do" framework relies on active modeling, it is essential that you are comfortable with the basics before leading a lesson.

For New or Returning Sewists: If you are learning alongside your student—or if it has been years since you last sat at a machine—we recommend completing the entire 7-week unit yourself before teaching it to others. Doing so ensures that technical skills like tension adjustment and seam allowances become muscle memory. This preparation allows you to focus your energy on your students’ progress rather than your own machine troubleshooting.

  • Self-Teaching Resources: To support you, I have included a curated Beginner’s Sewing YouTube Playlist. This is an excellent resource for those who do not have access to an in-person mentor and wish to master the necessary skills before the first day of class.
  • For the Students: Designed for absolute beginners (approx. ages 8 to adult).

New to soapmaking? Advanced, but want to learn new things? Get this book!

I bought the Kindle version of this book and absolutely love it. The variations with the recipes Jacqueline Dewey brings to both the novice and the expert are innovative and refreshing. Along with that, many complex elements and ingredients of soapmaking are clearly explained, along with things to look for and things to avoid. She really helps the beginner from falling into some discouraging pits. I'm going to have fun with this book for a long time! Highly recommend.

A Must Have Soapmaking Book

If you are going to attempt cold processed soap with tallow or lard, this is the book for you. I am familiar with soap calc, but sometimes it is nice to do a little studying on a new oil before diving into creating personal recipes. This book is an informative read on the subject. Jacqueline is a wealth of information and touches on about every aspect in the soap making process with tallow and lard along with rendering tallow, fat/oil/butter properties, soap colorants and additives, lye safety, essential oils descriptions, colorants, base recipes, and recipe expansion and so much more... topped off with a balm bonus section. Way more info than what I expected to get in this book. It was worth every penny paid, and the soaps produced have been enjoyed by my family and friends.

My advice is to sit and read it from cover to cover. Get some page tabs if there are reference points you want to revisit. The print is larger than most books which is a great bonus for those who need to look at the recipe from a distance while soaping or get tired of trying to focus on small book print, but until you get a few pages in can be a little daunting at first glance. The pages of the book are not stark white which is refreshing to my eyes. My only negative (and it is not a big one) is the lack of an index at the end of the book which is why I suggest page tabs.


This is by far one of my favorite soaping books, and the number ONE book for using tallow. If you are not a fan of formulating your own recipes, Jacqueline has it all done for you in this book. I highly recommend this for your soaping reference bookshelf. Many thanks to Jacqueline Dewey for a job well done!
