The Long Blue Road
The Blue Ridge is a different kind of mountain journey — no granite walls or glaciers, just ridges rolling to the horizon, layer after layer fading into blue. Then autumn turns the hardwood forests gold, orange, and scarlet, and this short drive follows that color south. Shenandoah begins it, the Blue Ridge Parkway becomes the spine, Asheville gives the mountains a cultural heartbeat, and the Great Smoky Mountains provide the finale — ending in Cataloochee Valley, where bull elk bugle through the mist while the forests burn around them. The farther south you drive, the later the leaves change: you're essentially chasing fall downhill.
