Kokopelli Review

is an anthology of middle level education articles that include a day spent with Roland Barth, author of Improving Schools from Within. Later, Dr. Jim Burns, one of the authors, led the Educational Leadership program at New Mexico Highlands University. Burns's reflections about his graduate students' visit to Roland Barth's farm mixes his understandings of transformational leadership with Barth's Harvard leadership experiences. Dr. Burns, previously as a director with National Middle School Association (NMSA / AMLE), was a recognized leader of advisory group organization in middle schools. The Anthology includes practical applications of advisory group activities.

Dr. Dave Harycki, an emeritus dean of Schools of Education in New Mexico and Nebraska, describes the historical development of middle level education, in three articles, a century after the first junior high schools were organized. Most of the history of the administrators who established the first junior high schools has been lost with time.

The collection and publication of these articles became a labor of love for Dr. Harycki after his friend and colleague, Dr. Burns, passed away in April 2019.
