PSHE & Citizenship Mirror Cards - Exploring Harmful Actions - part of the 'Web of Lives' Series
PHSE & Citizenship Mirror Cards -Exploring Harmful Actions - part of the 'Web of Lives' Series
See the action, explore the impact.
Description: The Mirror Cards help students recognise and reflect on behaviours that cause harm — from exclusion and unkindness to bullying and discrimination. Each card presents a relatable scenario that makes harmful actions visible, opening up safe, structured discussions about their impact. When paired with the Back Story Cards, they create a powerful two‑perspective resource: the action itself and the human experiences behind it.
Why they’re useful:
- Make harmful behaviours clear and relatable for students.
- Encourage accountability by showing that actions have consequences.
- Build empathy when paired with back stories, helping students see offenders as people shaped by struggles.
- Support restorative practice by opening up conversations about how communities can respond with compassion.
- Develop collective intelligence through group work and shared reflection.
How to use:
- Group discussions: Give each group a card and ask them to explore the harm caused, how others might feel, and what could be done differently.
- Paired perspectives: Use alongside Back Story Cards to show both sides of the same scenario.
- Circle time: Read aloud and invite silent reflection before opening up collective discussion.
- Role play: Act out scenarios, then pause to brainstorm alternative choices that lead to positive outcomes.
Curriculum relevance:
- UK: PSHE (bullying, respectful relationships, online safety), Citizenship (rights & responsibilities, community cohesion), Equality Act (protected characteristics).
- US: SEL (social awareness, relationship skills, responsible decision‑making), Health Education (bullying prevention, empathy, inclusion), Civics/Advisory programs.
Learning outcomes:
- Recognise that bullying and harm are defined by perception, not intention.
- Understand that even small actions can have big impacts.
- Learn that everyone has a choice in how they act and respond.
- Build empathy and resilience by exploring both behaviour and context.
