Bound for South Australia (Piccolo and Drums - 2 Piccolos, Snare Drum and Bass Drum)
This is a sea shanty commonly sung on the ships between England and Australia by the wool and wheat traders. Though a popular folk song in Australia, its origins are unknown and was sung with different lyrics in many parts of the world. Verses could be improvised and extra verses added. It was also known as 'Rollin' King' or 'South Australia'.
Here it is scored for piccolos and drums, but can also be played on fifes or flute. As this arrangement uses the call and answer feel of the men at sea, the first part often does the call and both piccolos do the answer. An alternative 2nd piccolo part has been included where the 2nd piccolo player also does the call for a fuller effect.
