This Line Lions Art Lesson teaches the element of art: line through a bold lion art project designed for grade 4. Students learn that line is one of the seven elements of art and that artists use it to build shapes, outline objects, create patterns, add texture, show movement, guide the viewer’s eye and communicate feelings.

Students then put that learning into a complete lion artwork, using straight, curved, wavy, zigzag, spiral, horizontal, vertical, diagonal, thick, thin, broken, dashed and looping lines, plus hatching and cross-hatching, to create a patterned mane and creative background. It suits elementary art teachers, classroom teachers, substitute teachers and homeschool families.

WHAT STUDENTS LEARN

Students explore how artists use line to create shapes and outlines, build patterns, add texture, show movement, create value and depth, add emphasis, guide the viewer’s eye and communicate feelings. They also see how hatching and cross-hatching create darker values, and how different lines can make artwork feel calm, energetic, bold or delicate.

Students can use the lion templates or design their own with the Build-a-Lion page, choosing ears, eyes, noses and mouths. The Pick-a-Pattern page gives them pattern choices for the mane and background, so they practice line on purpose while making their own creative decisions.
