Andreas Liss grew up the outsider. Indonesian parents in a small German town where families like his were rare. He was a shy child who learned to watch the world from a distance. That distance never left him. It became his subject.
Today he paints strangers. Faces he finds in photographs online — people he has never met, will never meet. Working in oil, alla prima, in a single sitting of two to three hours, he turns a stranger’s face into something slower and more attentive than the image that produced it. Since 2021 he has completed more than 1,000 portraits. Not for a career. Not for sales. Because he cannot stop.
