The content and style of the film:
In Munich, the slaughterhouse is located not far from the city center, in the middle of a residential area and opposite a well-known pub. Several times a year, many lights are lit here in memory of the animals that have been killed. Since 2014, writer Daniela Böhm has been committed to expressing her grief over animal suffering with vigils lasting up to 20 hours – to the incomprehension of many passers-by. Every time she is there, she encounters indifference and ignorance, especially on the night before World Animal Day 2018, during the Oktoberfest. While the animal transporters roll into the slaughterhouse, a boisterous after-Oktoberfest party is taking place in the restaurant at the entrance.
Daniela Böhm finds comfort and hope in the thought of the animals rescued at sanctuaries. During filming, a camera crew accompanied her on a visit to the Erdlingshof sanctuary.
The film “Im Licht der Hoffnung” (In the Light of Hope) takes a deep and atmospheric look at animal rights activism. Sensitive and poignant at the same time, it uses expressive images and encounters to tell the story of the long road to the hoped-for, but also already lived, utopia of a world free of animal suffering.
