Alberta Is Staying. So Why Isn’t the Argument Over?

What the referendum asked, and why “Who won?” is only the beginning.

Question 10 never asked whether Alberta should leave.

It asked whether to begin the legal process toward another vote.

If you marked a ballot on October 19, which question did you think you were answering?

The morning after a vote, everyone becomes a mind reader. Within hours, the Premier, the Prime Minister, the Opposition leader and a separatist organizer had each told you what the result meant, and each was right about something. One ballot. Four sentences. So what does staying settle, and what does it leave open?

🗳️ A vote to stay settles the exit, not the terms. Close the exit and the only move left is voice, so expect more argument, not less.

🧾 The electorate that chose Canada, about three in four on the unofficial count, also said yes, at 55 to 63 per cent, to all five questions tightening who qualifies for provincial programs. The totals cannot say how many did both: anywhere from a third to six in ten.

🚪 The one proposal voters turned down, narrowly, promised authority with no bill attached: opt out of federal programs, keep the money.

🪶 Alberta versus Ottawa is not the whole map. The AFN National Chief stood with Treaties 6, 7 and 8, and on voting day Siksika Nation ran out of ballots.

⚖️ The concession: three in four is a real mandate on the question asked, and non-binding does not mean inert. The Premier has promised to honour one non-binding result. Watch what gets honoured and what gets shelved.

For anyone tired of being told what their vote meant, and for any classroom or kitchen table where “we” gets used without saying who it includes. Four-question toolkit and ten-question results table included.

Download Alberta Is Staying and put the four questions to whoever explains the vote to you next.
