How to Get Into FIFO - The Handbook (PDF + Templates)
A straight, practical handbook for breaking into Western Australian FIFO and shutdown work — written by a FIFO supervisor.
Most “how to get into FIFO” content is written from the hiring-desk side. This handbook is written from the supervisor’s side: what actually gets you hired, and what decides whether you get asked back after your first swing.
What’s inside (27-page PDF, 13 chapters):
- Whether FIFO genuinely suits your life right now, and rosters explained honestly (8/6, 2/2, 2/1 and the rest)
- The real entry doors for beginners: trade assistant, labourer, camp and hospitality, shutdown labour-hire
- Which tickets are worth your money, which are a waste (Standard 11 is Queensland coal, not WA), and current approximate prices
- What happens at the pre-employment medical and drug and alcohol test
- Who actually hires beginners, and how to approach them
- Resume, cover letter and interview — including the “are they going to be a problem?” test
- Your first 48 hours on site, and what makes a supervisor keep you on
- Honest entry-level pay ranges and the Zone Tax Offset myth
Also included: FIFO Resume Template and Cover Letter Template (Word + PDF), the FIFO Starter Workbook (Excel: application tracker, tickets planner, packing list and money planner) and a one-page Tickets Roadmap.

No job guarantee. Nobody can promise you a FIFO job — not this handbook, not a recruiter, not a paid mentor. Prices and facts are general information current as at October 2026; confirm prices with your training provider and award rates at fairwork.gov.au. This is not legal, financial or tax advice.

One wrong ticket can cost more than this whole handbook. A Dogging ticket runs about $950–$1,225, an HR truck licence $1,100–$2,150, and Standard 11 $580–$715 (a Queensland requirement, not a WA one). The Handbook shows you which ticket to get first, and which to skip.
Questions
Is this a job guarantee?
No. Nobody can guarantee you a FIFO job, and you should walk away from anyone who says they can. The Handbook shows you the process: which tickets matter, who actually hires beginners, how to get your application read, and what gets you asked back.
I already have some tickets. Is it still worth it?
Yes. Most of the Handbook is about what comes after the tickets: where to apply, your resume, the medical, and your first swing. It also tells you which extra tickets are worth it for the role you want, so you don't overspend.
How is this different from free TikTok and YouTube videos?
It's the whole process in order, in one place, instead of scattered clips, plus resume and cover letter templates and a starter workbook.
Does it apply outside WA?
It's written for WA FIFO and shutdown work. Most of it applies anywhere, but ticket rules and inductions differ between states (Standard 11, for example, is Queensland only).
