THE COTTAGE LEARNING COLLECTION YEAR 2 • THE FAMILY GUIDE
Continue your family’s journey through history with Year 2 of The Cottage Learning Collection—a gentle, Christ-centered homeschool curriculum designed to bring the whole family together around beautiful books, meaningful ideas, Scripture, history, nature, and everyday life. Year 2 begins with the Early Church after the Apostles and carries your family through the fall of Rome, the Byzantine Empire, medieval kingdoms, the Vikings, castles and cathedrals, the Crusades, Magna Carta, the Renaissance, Gutenberg, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and the Age of Exploration, ending at the beginning of the 1500s. Rather than teaching every child an entirely separate curriculum, The Family Guide gives your family one shared historical journey while allowing each child to learn at their own level. Preschoolers through high school students can gather around the same stories, Scriptures, conversations, maps, people, and ideas—then complete work appropriate to their individual abilities. Inspired by the educational philosophy of Charlotte Mason, Montessori practical life, and Latter-day Saint faith, Year 2 encourages short lessons, living books, narration, Scripture study, hymns, habit formation, copy work, spelling, mathematics, nature study, poetry, Shakespeare, classical music, handicrafts, practical skills, outdoor exploration, and plenty of room for childhood. Inside, you’ll find a complete 36-week Biblical • LDS • World History timeline, three historical terms, Scripture and hymn connections, history companions, habits to gently develop throughout the year, weekly family learning pages, preschool Three-Period Lesson guidance, maps and chronology, important people and developments to explore, and an optional master book list for preschool through high school. The books are suggestions—not requirements. Families are encouraged to use books already on their shelves, visit the library, use audiobooks, follow interesting rabbit trails, and choose what works for their children.
