Draw Alongside Me!

My vision for this natural history drawing course is to extend beyond the primary curriculum to include lots of information about the anatomy of plants and animals, which enables both understanding and the ability to draw your subject. In this intricately structured course, I’ll guide you through the essentials of drawing nature, from plants and animals to rocks and landscapes. You’ll explore proportion, movement, form, and texture while learning how to truly see like an artist.

Exciting new films are added every month, ensuring a lifetime of learning, from sketching penguins to learning about a hippo’s hooves. Giving you access to sketch rare and beautiful plants and animals from exclusive HD footage with step-by-step guidance in split-screen films.

Let's kick off our journey of learning to draw plants, landscapes, rocks and animals!

LINE

Line can convey a vast amount of information even with an economy of marks. Explore creating highly controlled detailed drawings to spontaneous, gestural marks that imply speed and motion.

"A line is a dot that went for a walk. A drawing is simply a line going for a walk. Art does not reproduce what we see; rather, it makes us see."

— Paul Klee

SHAPE

Shapes have only two dimensions. Negative shapes depict the surrounding space, while positive shapes depict solid objects. Learn to see the natural world as a jigsaw of abstract shapes.

“I found I could say things with colour and shapes that I couldn't say any other way – things I had no words for.”

– Georgia O'Keeffe

TONE

Tone describes how light or dark something is, as well as how light or dark a colour is. Consider the tonal contrast between a light green and a dark crimson apple.

"If I could have had my own way, I would have confined myself to black and white."

– Edgar Degas

COLOUR

Colour is the sensation we perceive when light waves strike an object and reflect back into our eyes. Learn how to mix colour like a professional artist.

“The richness I achieve comes from nature, the source of my inspiration. ”

– Claude Monet

FORM

Form refers to the three-dimensional quality of an object—its height, width, and depth. While shape is flat, form appears solid and tangible. In art, form can be real, as in sculpture, or implied, as in a painting that uses light and shadow to suggest volume.

""My drawings are the result of my sculpture."

– Auguste Rodin

SPACE

Learn to create the illusion of space through perspective, overlapping, size, tone and colour so that your drawings take on a sense of depth.

“We love to see any part of the earth tinged with blue, cerulean, the colour of the sky, the celestial colour."

– Thoreau

PATTERN & TEXTURE

Pattern refers to a repeating design or motif, while texture refers to the surface quality of an artwork. Explore experimenting with both to create rhythm and tactile qualities.

"I regard texture similar to the function of taste buds in our mouths. But in a visual form. Texture does create a specific flavour which affects our senses."

– Adamo Macri
