Ravel - Prelude in A Minor (Bonus-Memory Lane)
The Prélude in A minor by Maurice Ravel is a short but beautifully refined piano piece, written in 1913 as a sight-reading test for the Paris Conservatoire. Despite its simplicity, it reflects Ravel’s signature style—clarity, elegance, and subtle colour.
The piece has a gentle, flowing character, built around a singing melody supported by soft, broken chords. Unlike more dramatic Romantic works, this prelude is intimate and restrained, requiring the performer to focus on tone control and balance rather than virtuosity.
One of the main challenges is achieving a smooth, legato line while keeping the accompaniment light and unobtrusive. The harmonies are delicate, with slight shifts in colour that create a sense of quiet expression and sophistication.
‘Memory Lane’ was inspired by this Prelude.
