In Washington, Shirley Walker, the first female head of the Central Intelligence Agency formulates a plan. Paul Walker, a young clerical worker at Langley, has experience of living in Thailand and even working in a bar in Phuket. He will be sent as a backpacker to find one of the specialists called “The Armourer.”

He arrives in Phuket but his carefully created cover, his legend, breaks down.

For more than three years, he is commoditised between several groups, smuggled across borders and within countries while the impotence of intelligence agencies is laid bare.

Rescue, when it comes, is not at like the ideas of return that has sustained him.
