Red and Black Chessboard

Handmade red and black chessboard featuring 2" squares with beveled edges and a 1.25" maple trim with a thin black walnut inlay. 

The squares aren't stained, they're made from woods that are naturally this color! With thermally modified red oak as the black squares and padauk as the red, the colors will deepen with time and will continue to compliment each other for years to come. 

What is thermally modified wood?

Some wood species can be baked at a specific temperature and duration to completely change the color of the wood. Red Oak is one of these species, and by going through this process, the color changes from a light pink color to an incredibly dark, rich, almost charcoal color. Using this process allows us to offer the deep color and contrast of black walnut with the unique grain and features of quarter-sawn oak, which is a highly sought-after wood which was used heavily in the Victorian era for it's beauty.
