Installment 16 of Finding the Names, Volume One — 1,343 more entries transcribed name by name from the original New Orleans ship manifests at the National Archives (Microfilm M1895, Roll 2, images 601–720). 383 pages, large print — the largest installment yet. FREE — please share it so families can find their people.

The lead story closes a mystery from Installment 13. The brig Aurilla's papers there told of 73 people shipped at Baltimore, a pirate attack, and one person taken who was nowhere named. Her filings stand in this installment, and on her arrival manifest the inspector wrote it out: "a Man named Simon, said to have been taken by the Pirates." Simon — shipped by Leon Chabert — has his name back. On the same manifest, two people correct the record in the margins: Isaac, entered as 40, "Calls himself 53"; Sarah, entered as 30, "Calls herself 54."

Also in these pages: the woman called Serena, found aboard the Madeira Packet in the place of a listed girl named Maria; five people missing from the brig Fame, three of whom exist only in the inspector's missing list; a girl inked out of the Lapwing's manifest entirely, left behind sick, her name unrecoverable; a man named Lewis who claimed his master's will held him to only three more years — while a pencilled note on his own row says ten; and the Hyperion's entry No. 20, first written "Edward," struck through because, as the inspector noted, "the man called Edward above says his name Adam."

Counting this installment, the Finding the Names project has recovered 9,323 entries from the New Orleans manifests, every one free. The companion guide and the Complete Set (Installments 1–16 in one download) are also free in this store.
