Library and Shelving Job Skills Task Cards: Call Numbers, Returns and Shelf Reading, Ages 14 to 21
These library and shelving job skills task cards teach the work of a library aide or media center helper: checking in returns, sorting carts, shelving by call number, reading shelves, and helping patrons, with safety rules, scenarios, and a call number practice page.
Why I made this: School libraries and public libraries are some of the best first job sites I have found for students. The work is calm and steady, and it rewards the same careful reading students practice with filing. What tripped them up was call numbers, so this set adds a call number guide and practice page to the usual job site format.
What’s included (15 pages):
• A teacher page with three levels and a 2 week plan
• A job snapshot: job titles, what a shift looks like, and what employers look for
• 16 vocabulary cards and a matching worksheet
• 5 task sequence cards and put it in order worksheets
• 8 safety rules and a 10 item safe or unsafe sort
• 12 "What would you do?" scenario cards and a response planner
• An on the job checklist with student and supervisor ratings
• A call number guide (nonfiction, fiction, biography, and picture books) and a call number practice page
• An answer key with possible responses for every scenario
• A data sheet with a prompt level key
• Blank cards for your own job site
How I use it: I teach the vocabulary and job snapshot first, model each task sequence and have students act it out, then use the scenario cards for role play a few at a time. Before a job site visit, students set goals on the on the job checklist, and I take data on the data sheet.
Who it is for: Special education, transition, life skills, and vocational teachers in grades 6 to 12 and 18 to 21 programs, job coaches, and paras.
What you download: C 01 to 15 Library Shelving Job Skills Task Cards.pdf (15 pages, US Letter, print ready).
How this is different: No other Job Site Task Cards set covers library work. It uses the same layout as the rest of the series and adds a call number guide and practice page. Office Filing Work Task Box teaches ABC and number order with folders; this set teaches call numbers, returns, and shelf reading.
Part of the Job Site Task Card Series.
