Your embedding model never sees your documents — it sees your chunks, and it is blamed for their sins. 42 production templates & checklists distilled from Chapters 1–5 of Chunking: The Complete Science: why chunking sets the recall ceiling (with the fifty-chunk inspection), the fixed-size baseline discipline and its size-and-overlap sweep, recursive and structural splitting under a size governor, semantic chunking measured with its honest cost ledger, and late chunking & contextual retrieval priced repair by repair. PDF + Markdown source.

The manual was in the index. The answer still came out wrong.

A hospital network's clinical-operations assistant answered from 6,000 pages of policy manuals, procedure guides, and compliance bulletins — competently built, stubbornly mediocre. An embedding upgrade, a reranker, and a prompt overhaul changed almost nothing. What changed it was reading the chunks themselves: 1,000-character slices of extracted PDF text, cut wherever the character count landed. Procedure steps were severed from the warnings printed directly above them. Dosage tables were split between the row that named the medication and the rows that named its limits. One chunk ended at "…contraindicated in patients under" — the age that completed the sentence began the next chunk, attached to a heading about storage temperatures. That story (Meridian Health, the book's fictional worked example) opens Chunking: The Complete Science — Part 1, and this pack is its working half: 42 copy-paste templates and checklists distilled from Chapters 1–5 of the dedicated chunking book — measure the ceiling your current cut imposes, build the fixed-size baseline like a control group and sweep it, cut along the document's bones, cut where meaning changes, and repair the context the cut removed, each move priced and proven before the next.

Every template carries the book's tested positions built in: a chunk audited on five properties (completeness, cohesion, context retention, retrievability, provenance), a recall ceiling computed as arithmetic rather than argued as opinion, sizes stated in tokens counted with the production tokenizer, overlap derived from the spans you cannot afford to sever instead of copied as a folklore percentage, a separator hierarchy that descends per piece with merges that never cross a heading, a size governor whose intervention rate reports your corpus's structural health back to you, semantic thresholds swept with their chunk-size distributions and binding rates reported beside recall, and context repairs bought in price order — breadcrumbs first, priced repairs last, per segment, one at a time. Where the book gives an example — its illustrative sweep table, its fictional worked sweeps and field configurations — the template labels it as the book's example for you to replace with your own measurements. Bracketed fields are yours to fill; nothing here invents a setting for your corpus.

What's inside — 42 templates & checklists in 6 sections

1. Why Chunking Sets the Ceiling & the Fifty-Chunk Inspection (7) — Five-Property Chunk Audit — the atom of retrieval, scored · Fifty-Chunk Inspection Worksheet — read your own index before buying anything · Recall-Ceiling Calculator — the arithmetic no downstream stage can beat · Symptom-to-Segmentation Diagnostic Table — complaints mapped to causes · Four Forces Ranking Sheet — every strategy is a trade · Chunk-Length Survey Sheet — the first cheap look at your chunks' shape · Stakeholders-of-the-Cut Review Sheet — who else owns this decision

2. Fixed-Size Chunking & the Baseline Discipline (7) — Baseline Discipline Charter — the control group comes first · Token-Counting Honesty Checklist — a size without a tokenizer is a rumor · Size Dial & Plateau Finder — between confetti and dilution · Overlap Derivation Worksheet — paying tokens to heal boundaries · Size-and-Overlap Sweep Table — turning folklore into a curve · Worked Sweep Reading Sheet — one honest walk-through, read end to end · Baseline Failure-Mode & Rig Record — name how the baseline fails, and under which rig

3. Recursive & Structural Splitting — Respect the Bones (7) — Separator Hierarchy Design Sheet — audit the ladder against real documents · Recursive Splitting Configuration — descent, keep-separator, merge rule · Heading-Aware Breadcrumb Template — chunks with addresses, not positions · Structure-Lies Audit — decorative, flattened, wrong-grain · Size Governor Specification — floors, ceilings, honest enforcement · Governor Case-Law Table — the rulings, collected · Edge-Cases Rulings Sheet — lists, notes, captions, asides, formats

4. Semantic Chunking, Measured (7) — Semantic Chunking Algorithm Sheet — sentences, distances, breakpoints · Threshold Method Selector — percentiles, deviations, gradients · Buffering & Window Configuration — why raw pairs mislead · Semantic Cost Ledger — the honest invoice, before the purchase · Worked Threshold Study Record — tuning reported in full, or not at all · Corpus Win/Loss Profile Gate — where semantic chunking earns, and where it pays for nothing · Proxy Signals & Multilingual Guard Sheet — triage instruments, never verdicts

5. Late Chunking & Contextual Retrieval — Give Chunks Their Context Back (7) — Lost-Support Classification Sheet — name the bleeding before buying the bandage · Late Chunking Specification — embed the document, then cut the vectors · Contextual Retrieval Preface Template — a preface for every chunk · Repair Invoice Comparison Table — the two repairs and the cheaper options, on one ledger · Repair Composition Worksheet — one change at a time, against the standing baseline · Field Configuration Record — both repairs, one corpus, every receipt · Skeptical Evidence Reading Sheet — what the repairs cannot do

6. Part 1 Gates & Working Artefacts (7) — Chunk Configuration Record — every field Chapters 1–5 require, in one place · Inspection-to-Strategy Decision Sheet — from the tally to the family · Sweep & Tuning Scorecard — every study reported in the full row · Preface Audit Log — the quality gate on generated context · Governor Intervention & Binding Report — the pipeline reporting on the corpus · Repair Decision Record — buy in price order, record the refusals · Part 1 Chunking Gate — Chapters 1–5 Sign-Off — the book's five chapter checklists consolidated into one evidence-backed gate (40 lines)

Who this is for

RAG and platform engineers who own a retrieval index, search and AI engineers whose systems answer from the wrong passage while the dashboards blame the model, and technical leads deciding whether a smarter segmentation strategy earns its complexity on their corpus. The source book assumes you run, or are building, a retrieval system; no machine-learning research background is required. If nobody in your organisation can state your current segmentation's recall ceiling — or why your chunk size is what it is, in tokens, with its sweep curve attached — start at Template 1.

What this pack is not

Not Part 2. Chunking code, tables and structured data, hostile inputs (PDFs, slides, transcripts), the chunk anatomy and full metadata contract, the evaluation harness, the benchmark results, the failure atlas, and production pipelines are the book's Chapters 6–12 and Appendices A–B. They live in the Part 2 companion pack; nothing here restates them, and this pack is complete and useful without them.

Not a general RAG architecture pack. Product #2, RAG Architecture Templates, designs the retrieval pipeline end to end from a different book. This pack is chunking only — the segmentation stage, at book depth. The two packs do not restate each other.

No runnable code or tooling. The book's survey, sweep-runner, splitter, and pooling sketches are simplified, structurally honest shapes described inside the chapters. The pack ships the templates that specify, audit, and operate these components — not a working splitter, embedder, or evaluation harness.

No universal best strategy or guaranteed recall gain. The book's own position: every strategy trades granularity, boundary fidelity, determinism/cost, and surface match, and the right trade is a property of your corpus. Worked numbers in the pack are the book's, labeled as illustrative results or fictional worked examples — your sweep and your gold set produce your numbers.

No benchmark results. The book's cross-strategy benchmark findings sit in its later chapters and are Part 2's; this pack teaches the measurement discipline of Chapters 1–5 and carries only those chapters' illustrative and worked figures, labeled as such.

Companion products

Chunking: The Complete Science — Part 2 is this pack's sibling, built from Chapters 6–12 and Appendices A–B of the same book — code, table and record chunking, hostile inputs, the chunk contract, the harness, the measured results, the failure atlas, and production pipelines: a companion for when you are ready for the second half — never a requirement for this pack to work. This pack stands alone.

Note: the $99 Architecture Templates Bundle currently contains Products #1–#3 only. This pack launches standalone; no bundle inclusion is promised for this product.
