Printable One Tété Lohkay
In honor of Saint Martin’s Day, a special time when the French and Dutch sides come together to celebrate our beautiful island, I wanted to pay tribute to a remarkable and powerful figure in our history : One Tété Lohkay.
She was an enslaved woman who escaped from a Dutch plantation. As punishment, the slave master cruelly cut off one of her breasts. But even this horrific act did not break her spirit. She escaped again, finding freedom and helping others by guiding them through the hills to the other side of the island.
In my drawing, I added lines to represent the paths she once took, the routes of courage and resilience that led to freedom.
Her fight for liberty continues to inspire us today and reminds us why we can stand proud as Saint-Martiners.
