THE GREENLIGHT™ | Turn a Book into a Movie or Series | Creative Novel Study & Film Pitch Activity | Grades 6–8 | 2-Page Printable
🎬 THE GREENLIGHT™
ONE BOOK. ONE PITCH. WILL YOUR SHOW GET MADE?
You've read the book. Now convince the world to watch it!
Imagine your favourite novel is about to become the next big movie or streaming series.
There's just one problem...
The studio hasn't approved it yet.
And YOU are responsible for getting the green light!
Welcome to THE GREENLIGHT™, a creative, two-page book-to-screen activity that challenges learners to transform a novel or short story into an exciting movie or television series.
But this isn't an ordinary book review.
Learners become producers, casting directors, designers and creative decision-makers as they develop their own screen adaptation and pitch it to an imaginary production studio.
Their mission? Create a production so convincing that the studio simply cannot say no!

THE OFFICIAL PITCH
ONE BOOK. ONE PITCH. WILL YOUR SHOW GET MADE?
Learners begin by transforming their chosen book into a movie or television series.
They must:
🎬 DESIGN THE OFFICIAL POSTER
Create an original promotional poster that captures the atmosphere, characters or central conflict of the story.
🎬 WRITE THE TAGLINE
Develop a short, memorable tagline that grabs an audience's attention.
🎬 CREATE THE SYNOPSIS
Write a compelling, spoiler-free description that makes viewers want to watch the production.
🎬 PLAN THE DETAILS
Decide whether their adaptation will be a movie or series, then select its genre, audience rating and release year.
The challenge is to make the story irresistible without revealing too much!
🎥 PAGE 2 — THE PRODUCTION PLAN
BRINGING YOUR STORY TO SCREEN
The studio is interested!
Now learners must prove that they have a creative vision worth investing in.
1. CASTING
Choose three important characters and decide who should portray them.
Learners may select real actors or invent their own.
They must explain why each casting choice suits the character.
2. KEY SCENE IN THE TRAILER
Which moment from the story would make audiences stop scrolling and start watching?
Learners select a memorable scene, illustrate or describe it, and justify their choice.
3. SOUNDTRACK
Choose five songs that would feature in the production.
Learners consider how music could contribute to the atmosphere and identity of their adaptation.
4. THE GREENLIGHT DECISION
Another production company is adapting the very same book!
What makes YOUR version different?
Why should the studio choose YOUR pitch?
Learners must use persuasive reasoning to defend their creative vision.
5. THE STUDIO HAS A PROBLEM!
A final production challenge asks learners to consider what they would remove if their adaptation became too long.
How could they preserve the meaning of the story while making difficult creative decisions?

❤️ WHY TEACHERS WILL LOVE IT
THE GREENLIGHT™ transforms a traditional book review into a creative experience.
Instead of simply answering questions about a novel, learners must demonstrate their understanding by making purposeful decisions about how the story could be adapted for the screen.
They need to understand the characters, recognise important events, consider the story's themes and communicate why their version deserves an audience.
The activity combines artistic expression with meaningful literary thinking, making it particularly useful for learners who enjoy visual and creative approaches to literature.
And because it can be used with almost any novel or short story, it offers teachers a flexible activity for different reading units.
One book. One pitch. One chance to impress the studio.
Will YOUR production get THE GREENLIGHT™?
