"If I can't understand it myself, I can't teach it."

This applies without a doubt to the traditional / Suzuki cello position naming system. It was designed specifically for the violin hand shape, and then ported thoughtlessly to cello without regard to its applicability. It doesn't really make sense on cello.

I've been using a much more sensible naming system for the past decade with my students instead, with great success. It's a modified version of Starker's chromatic system.  This two page pdf illustrates the sensible position names on the neck of the cello visually, provides detailed staff notation and fingerings on the A and D string, and correlates the positions to their first introduction in Suzuki volumes 1-3 for ease in teaching.
