Sensible Position Names for Cello
"If I can't understand it myself, I can't teach it."
This applies without a doubt to the standard cello position naming system used by the otherwise excellent Suzuki, Samuel Applebaum, and Rick Mooney methods and repertoire collections, among countless others. It's totally mystifying.
I renamed the positions in a sensible way and have been using this improved system for 10 years with my students with great success. This two page pdf illustrates the sensible position names on the neck of the cello visually, provides detailed staff notation and fingerings on the A and D string, and correlates the positions to their first introduction in Suzuki volumes 1-3 for ease in teaching.
