A working naval radio on your projector/smart whiteboard. Learners tune in, log the traffic, read callsigns back in NATO phonetics, and finish with a graded result and a printable certificate. One file. No install. Works offline.

A browser-based Royal Navy VHF receiver simulator with assessment built in. It is a single HTML file. Open it and teach. Run it from a USB stick, a shared drive, your VLE, or a hosted link. Nothing to install, no accounts, no internet needed once downloaded.

The radio. An authentic receiver console with a live frequency display, signal meter and status lights. Learners turn the channel knob to tune. Off channel they get static. On the right channel the signal locks. Synthesised radio audio runs throughout: squelch open and close, roger beeps, the DSC distress alarm, mic clicks and carrier hiss. The volume and squelch knobs work.

The scenarios. Four cases that build in difficulty:

  1. A clear MAYDAY from a sailing vessel
  2. A degraded contact report from a warship, with the signal breaking up
  3. Two stations transmitting over each other on the calling channel
  4. A live search and rescue net with a helicopter and lifeboat checking in

The task. In each one the learner tunes in, listens, recalls the information passed over the air (position, persons on board, callsigns, ETAs, who said what), and reads callsigns back in NATO phonetics. Some recall questions are timed to mirror real watchkeeping.

The grade. Every learner finishes with a result mapped to three levels:

  • Pass: demonstrated use of the system
  • Merit: competent operator
  • Distinction: confident and consistently competent operator

You also get a per-skill breakdown, a timestamped evidence log you can copy into a mark book, and a printable certificate with the learner and assessor names.

Accessibility. Sound on or off, high contrast, colour-blind safe palette, larger text and reduced flicker. Correct and incorrect answers are always shown in words and symbols, never colour alone.

What you get One HTML file. That is the whole product. It runs on Windows, Mac, Chromebook and interactive whiteboards in any modern browser.
