The printed 2023 edition of Every Day in PreK: Math Calendar or Counting Tape Pieces for prekindergarten is published by Gillespie Kanter Group, LLC. These are printed in color and perforated, as previously published and sold by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and is still a tried and trusted way to teach "A Lot of Math in a Little Time."

The package includes one set of the pieces for each month, Aug./Sept.-May/June and Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow markers. You will need two sets of pieces if you choose to use both the Calendar and Counting Tape in your classroom.

Each month’s unique Pre-K  pattern of colors and geometric shapes for your Calendar and on a Counting Tape to 31, gives your students lots of “math to see and talk about”.

In Pre-K, the authors have chosen to have the Counting Tape go with the Calendar Date, a more appropriate activity for preschoolers, instead of matching the Days in School. This provides repeated experience throughout the year observing both the quantity and counting sequence grow from 1 to 31.

The pattern on the Counting Tape matches the one on the Calendar, if you choose to display a Calendar in your classroom. The linear format of the Counting Tape helps children gain experience and confidence discovering and following the repeating pattern, counting, learning the sequence of numbers, and gaining number sense for quantities growing from 1 to 31.

Topics throughout the school year to guide your focus questions and for preview and review include:

  • 1-to-1 counting, cardinality,
  • understanding number of last item counted names the entire amount
  • using comparative language (more, fewer, greater, less, same, equal)
  • predicting 1 more/1 fewer or less
  • reading numerals to 10 and beyond,
  • understanding teen numbers as a group of ten and some extra ones.
  • matching quantities to numerals
  • recognizing and naming 2-D and 3-D figures using language of geometry
  • describing likenesses and differences when sorting and classifying
  • learning calendar concept of Monday to Friday school days vs. weekend days
  • using pattern and reasoning to predict the next day's calendar piece

As each piece appears, students have fun responding to "What do you see? What do you notice?" while building math language.
