This Autumn Value Grid Drawing resource helps students build drawing skills through observation, value shading and realism. Students study a black and white photograph square by square and transfer what they see into a blank grid, paying close attention to light, shadow, edges and subtle value shifts. The photographs were taken by Kathleen McGiveron (Ms Artastic).

It is a strong fit for grades 5 to 10. Using real autumn photographs instead of cartoon images gives older and more advanced students a more mature, skill-based challenge, while the grid gives them a clear system to follow. Some grade 5 students will be ready for it, especially if they already have some experience with shading or observational drawing.

HOW TO USE IT

Use it for autumn or fall art lessons, value and shading units, observational drawing practice, realism lessons, independent studio work, sub plans, art centers and homeschool art. It works as a one-page skill builder, part of a longer realism unit, or a booklet students complete over several classes.

The grids and photographs are already prepared, so you do not need to find references or make your own grid systems. That leaves you free to teach value, contrast, texture, form and drawing accuracy.
