Standing Tall in Babylon
By Kimani Upshur, M.Ed.
Standing Tall in Babylon: Three Friends and the Fiery Furnace retells Daniel chapter 3 for young readers in ten chapters. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego are taken far from home (Chapter 1: Far from Home), face King Nebuchadnezzar's giant gold statue (Chapter 2: The Giant Gold Statue), and refuse to bow (Chapter 3: Bow Down or Else; Chapter 4: We Will Not Bow). The furnace is heated seven times hotter (Chapter 5), yet four men are seen walking in the fire (Chapter 6: Four Men in the Fire); the friends come out when called (Chapter 7: Come Out!), and the king is amazed (Chapter 8). Chapter 9, Friends Who Stand Together, and Chapter 10, You Can Stand Tall Too, bring the story home. A Note to Grown-Ups explains that each chapter ends with either a Do — one simple thing to do this week — or a Pray — a short prayer to repeat. Scripture quotations are from the ESV® Bible. The book closes with A Special Invitation: Give Your Life to Jesus, including The Sinner's Prayer. Written from a Christian worldview — Scripture first.
