the dating translation guide

mixed signals, almost-relationships, and the texts that keep you checking your phone.

what they said. what it could mean. what their behavior already answered.

so, what the fu*k does that mean?

“i miss you.”

“we should hang soon.”

“i've just been really busy.”

“i'm not looking for anything serious right now.”

perfectly ordinary sentences that somehow become the subject of a 45-minute investigation.

we examine the wording. the timing. the punctuation. the shift in energy. we consult the group chat, revisit previous conversations, and occasionally construct an entire psychological profile of someone who has given us approximately six pieces of information.

i find this fascinating.

particularly because i've done it myself.

somewhere between what someone says and what we want it to mean, our imaginations can get remarkably creative.

and that's where this guide comes in.

the dating translation guide

70 pages of dating translations, human contradictions, questionable interpretations, and observations from someone who spends an unreasonable amount of time thinking about why we do the things we do.

there are 30 familiar dating statements inside.

the flattering ones. the confusing ones. the ones that sound like plans but mysteriously never become plans.

each one gets examined through three questions:

what did they say?

what could it mean?

what does their behavior tell us?

someone's words might be sincere. their feelings might be real. the chemistry might be extraordinary.

and the connection still might not work for you.

funny how that happens.

inside the guide

30 dating translations

from “you're different” to “i need space,” with a closer look at what the words might mean and what deserves more attention than the words themselves.

the chemistry problem

a personal exploration of attraction, anticipation, inconsistent attention, and the rather inconvenient possibility that sometimes we're more attached to the feeling than the person.

reply without auditioning

actual things you can say when the plans are vague, the communication is inconsistent, or you're ready to stop participating in an arrangement that doesn't work for you.

field notes

a place to separate what happened from the elaborate story your brain wrote about it.

and a few other observations about the strange business of wanting to be loved by another human being.

I felt this

Reading this book honestly felt like my big sister was lecturing me the entire time, but with annotations to back everything up! 😂 It really makes you think about dating, different communication styles, and what people are actually saying between the lines. There were definitely moments where I felt personally called out, but in the best way. It's funny, relatable, and gives you a different perspective on relationships. It's like getting advice from your big sister, whether you asked for it or not!

Great read.

I laughed at how many times I recognized myself in this book. 😂 It's funny, a little too accurate at times, and makes you think about how much meaning we give someone's words instead of paying attention to what they're doing. Definitely had a few “well, shit” moments reading this.

The pattern reading part got me

The best part is that it keeps bringing you back to what they said vs. what their behavior is showing you. The chemistry section especially called me out. Very funny, very specific and inconvenient to my delusions.
