Hadrian’s Wall Wildlife Tracker (Printable Trail Checklist)
Don't Forget the Wildlife You Spot Along Hadrian's Wall 🦌
When I walked the 84-mile Hadrian's Wall Path, I didn't realize how much wildlife was actually along the route. I was focused on the miles and the history, so I wasn't always paying attention to it. When you're covering that kind of distance day after day, it's easy for something you noticed to turn into a blur by the time you stop for the night. I know I saw plenty of wildlife along the way, but I can't tell you exactly what or how much.
I originally created this checklist as part of my guided journal, My Hadrian's Wall Journey: A Guided Walking Journal & Memory Book. If you're looking for a simple way to track the wildlife you spot, you can get the checklist on its own. It gives you space to check off and note animals, birds, and other wildlife as you see them, so you don't lose track the way I did.
This checklist covers wildlife. If you want more than that, a sites checklist, daily journal pages, space to reflect on the whole walk, and everything else that comes with it, the journal gives you all of it, and I'd recommend that instead.
What You'll Get
- List organized by category: mammals, birds, and reptiles and fish, with species ranging from sheep and deer to curlews and adders, plus plenty more.
- A quick way to log what you see: each animal has its own space to tally sightings and jot a quick note if you want one, nothing that needs filling in on the spot.
- Space for anything not on the list: blank lines to record wildlife you spot that isn't already covered.
- Printable PDF Format: designed to print clearly on both A4 and US Letter paper, at home or at your local print shop.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who created this checklist?
Hi, I'm Anisa. When I walked the Hadrian's Wall Path myself, I didn't realize how much wildlife was actually along the route, so I wasn't always looking for it, and I know I saw plenty I can't recall now. I put this checklist together afterward so other walkers can keep track as they go. I also run the Hadrian's Wall First Time Walkers' Community on Facebook, where walkers share what they've spotted along the way.
Will this help me identify what I'm seeing?
No. This is a recording checklist, not a wildlife identification guide, it doesn't include photos or descriptions to help you identify what you're seeing. Bring an identification app or guide along if you want help naming what you see.
Who is this checklist for?
Anyone walking Hadrian's Wall who enjoys spotting wildlife and wants a simple way to keep track of what they see. It's not a substitute for a wildlife identification guide, just a record of your own sightings.
How many pages do I get?
This is a 3-page PDF: one page for mammals, one for birds, and one for reptiles, fish, and any other wildlife you spot that isn't already listed.
Is this included in the Hadrian's Wall walking journal?
Yes. This checklist is one section of My Hadrian's Wall Journey: A Guided Walking Journal & Memory Book. If you already have the printable or paperback journal, you don't need to buy this separately, it's already included there.
Should I buy this checklist or the journal?
This checklist is enough on its own if tracking wildlife is all you're after. For a fuller picture of your walk, I'd recommend My Hadrian's Wall Journey: A Guided Walking Journal & Memory Book instead, it includes this checklist plus a sites checklist, daily journal pages, and space to reflect on the whole walk.
