This Easter Egg Directed Drawing Line Art Lesson guides students step by step through drawing a large decorated Easter egg with bold line designs, expressive facial features and a patterned background, then painting it with a wax resist watercolor technique.

It is a spring art project for elementary classrooms, homeschool art, substitute plans and seasonal Easter art, made for classroom teachers, art teachers and homeschool educators. Students also read about the tradition of Easter eggs, answer comprehension questions, reflect on their process and respond to writing prompts, and because every student designs their own patterns, every finished egg looks different.

HOW THE PROJECT WORKS

Students draw a large egg shape with simple curved lines, add facial features and decorative details, then fill the egg with line patterns such as zigzags, curves, loops and shapes. Repeated line patterns in the background add contrast. Next they color selected details with wax crayons and paint over the artwork with watercolor or tempera paint, so the crayon lines stay bold while the colors blend.

The lesson finishes with reflection, the reading comprehension questions and optional writing activities.

MATERIALS

Wax crayons, thick white paper or cardstock, watercolor paints or tempera paint cakes, paintbrushes and water cups.
