There are few things more magical than fireflies glowing in the darkness of night. As an antsy kid trying to stay entertained during my dad’s church softball games, one of my favorite pastimes was chasing after fireflies flickering around the field; and you do need to chase them, because the space they light up one moment will be empty the next! This slouchy beanie features eyelets spread out over a stockinette background, just as fireflies dot humid summer evenings. With a k2, p2 ribbed brim and easy decreases on the crown, the simple construction makes it a great project for newer knitters as well as for more experienced knitters who want to enjoy an uncomplicated knit.
Some pattern testers found that the hat fit more like a traditional beanie than a slouch, so if desired you may decide to knit some additional rounds for extra slouchiness or block the hat to more generous proportions. Alternatively, if you definitely prefer the fit of a traditional beanie, the Pattern Notes on Page 2 provides recommendations for omitting some rounds to help achieve a more snug fit.
Note: This pattern was designed using the mystery colorway from the Southern Skeins July (2021) “Not Sock Yarn Club Box.” Once the colors have been revealed, the pictures in the pattern listing will be updated to show the sample in color.
YARN: Approx. 120 (155, 187) yds / 110 (142, 171) m of DK weight yarn. This sample uses Southern Skeins Sparkle DK-Superwash (75% Superwash Merino, 20% Nylon, 5% Silver toned Stellina; 231 yds / 211 m, 3.5 oz / 100 g per skein) in the mystery colorway from the July “Not Sock Yarn Club Box.”
GAUGE (measured after blocking, but unstretched):
Brim: Approx. 26 sts / 32 rounds to 4” / 10 cm in k2, p2 ribbing
Body: Approx. 24 sts / 30 rounds to 4” / 10 cm in stockinette stitch
Please note: Gauge will vary based on how generously hat is blocked. I re-blocked the sample before taking Photo 1 so that the eyelets would show up more clearly, and my gauge ended up changing to be wider but shorter (24 sts /32 rds to 4” / 10 cm in ribbing, 22 sts / 32 rds to 4” / 10 cm in stockinette).
NEEDLES:
US 5 / 3.75 mm size circular needles, or whatever size attains brim gauge.
US 6 / 4.0 mm size circular needles, or one size up from brim gauge needles
