After completing Lessons 1–5, you will be able to:

• Read and pronounce basic Japanese sounds (hiragana and katakana).
• Use common greetings appropriately according to the time of day.
• Say "thank you," "excuse me," and "good-bye" in everyday situations.
• Ask for things politely using expressions such as Onegai shimasu.
• Introduce yourself and greet someone for the first time.
• Tell people your name and ask for theirs.
• Ask and answer simple yes/no questions.
• Talk about languages, this you can speak, do or understand.
• Invite someone to do something using negative questions (~masen ka?).
• Respond naturally to invitations.
• Use the sentence particles ne and yo to add nuance to conversations.
