This hat started as a way of playing around with crown shaping, using less-frequent decreases for a pointier top. The result was a shape that reminded me of almonds, so I’ve named the hat using the Yiddish word for the nuts. This hat offers the option to fold the deep ribbing all the way up for a less-slouchy fit and maximum warmth for the ears.

This pattern can be knit in worsted or DK yarn. The fabric will be tighter/stiffer in a heavier yarn, allowing the crown to stand up more easily. You will need approximately 180 (202, 255) yds./165 (185, 233) m.

To knit this pattern, you need to know how to:

• work in the round,
• work basic decreases (k2tog and ssk),
• graft live stitches, and
• work a provisional cast-on using scrap yarn (for optional tubular cast-on).

Notions needed:

• five stitch markers (one different from the other four)
• yarn needle
• length of waste yarn (for provisional cast-on)
• crochet hook (optional; for provisional cast-on)
