SURFIN’ LINGO is an attempt to cobble together many of the words, terms and expressions that have become indelibly linked with the surfing lifestyle since the outburst of interest in all things SURF, beginning in the late ‘50s/early ‘60s, particularly with the publication of the book Gidget in 1957 and its translation into film by Columbia Pictures two years later.

Built around the diary kept by young Los Angeles born Kathy Kohner, Gidget (written by her fifty-something father, Bohemia born Frederick Kohner) told the story of the “Go Heads” of Malibu, a surfing fraternity that took the young sixteen year old under their wing, introducing her to the joys of surfboard riding.

In the young Kohner’s diary entries (and book/film) were the words, terms and expressions of an emerging form of communication that was then only understood by a select few. It was as a result of the widespread success of Gidget the book and GIDGET the film (and their sequels) that this hither to unknown form of verbal interaction was broadcast to a much wider demographic.

The general public’s induction into the world of surfin’ lingo was enhanced upon with the advent of “SURF MUSIC”, a musical genre that extolled virtually every aspect of the surfing lifestyle.

Over forty pages of the E-Book SURFIN’ LINGO are devoted to documenting such words, etc., together with an explanation of how the lingua franca of the surfer developed, with particular emphasis on the impact that “SURF MUSIC” in general, and the musical group the Beach Boys from Hawthorne, California in particular, had with the dissemination of the developing vernacular itself.

Although not a bona fide surf band (the reasons why they were not are explained in the E-Book), the subsequent international success of the Beach Boys (like “GIDGET”) introduced surfin’ lingo to an audience that at that time had little, if any, knowledge of what such words, terms and expressions conveyed.

In addition, the Beach Boys and other successful “SURF MUSIC” groups of the period - The Chantays and The Surfaris from America for example, plus The Atlantics, The Joy Boys and The Denvermen from Australia - were also responsible for the subsequent entry of a variety of the SURFIN’ LINGO words, terms and expressions into the everyday lexicon and for the general public’s understanding of up until then such a “foreign” dialect.

A comprehensive look at the Beach Boys’ musical output containing surfin’ lingo is also included (with explanations), together with over thirty pages of colour and black and white graphics, record labels, advertisements and photos, all of which provide both a visual guide and an explanation of the language of the surfer from its conception and inception.
