The magnificence of the Oregon coast and the small port town of Harbor inspired me to create a collection of accessories worked in a simple knit and purl herringbone texture. My favorite go-to worsted weight wool, Cascade Yarns 220® shows off the swirling stitch pattern beautifully in this easy hat project.

Skill Level:  Easy
Required Skills: knit stitch, purl stitch, decrease, long-tail cast on, working in-the-round with circular and double-pointed needles.
Size: Adult medium
Finished Measurements:  18" circumference (unstretched); 7 ½ " height (measured from cast on edge to beginning of crown)
Gauge:  20 sts and 24 rows = 4"/10cm in pattern stitch. Take time to check gauge.

Materials:
  • Yarn: worsted weight yarn; 200 yards. Sample shown in Cascade Yarns 220® (100% Peruvian Highland Wool; 220yds/100g): 1 hank in Aqua #8951
  • Needles: US 8/5.0mm circular needle (16") and set of 5 double-pointed needles, or size needed to obtain gauge
  • 8 stitch markers
  • Yarn needle to weave in ends
Notes: A long-tail cast on is used for this project to provide a stretchy edge. To see the long-tail cast on in action, a free video is available at http://newstitchaday.com/long-tail-cast-on/.
