Glen Cook was born in New York City in 1944. His love for writing began when he was in grade school and high school, writing occasional articles for his school’s newspaper. After High School, Glen enlisted in the US Navy and left later to join college.
Cook is the brains behind The Chronicles of a Black Company. The series follows an elite mercenary unit through its adventures for several decades of its history. The series was such a success that it went on to become a cult classic, especially among servicemen and ex-servicemen. Apart from The Black Company series, Glen Cook is also known for his Garret P.I series. The Garret P.I Chronicles is based on the haphazard adventures of a Garret. A hard-boiled city detective. He is also the author of the Dread Empire series.
Currently, Cook has retired from his job at General Motors. He lives with his wife and children in St. Luis Missouri. He has the time to devote himself to his writing career, but he feels he was more productive while working at General Motors.
The Black Company series is based on the adventures of the Black Company, Lat of the free companies of Khatovar, the remaining company of the 12 true companies. The company is an elite mercenary force that was once numbered in thousands, but only a couple of hundreds are remaining.
In the Chronicles of The Black Company, Glen Cook managed to single-handedly manage to change the face of fantasy novels.
The storyline of the entire series is captivating. Cook draws his readers into an action-packed world, free of death. Unlike many books, death is at the forefront of the entire book.
As the Black Company struggles for existence, it is brought into the war between the rebels and the lady’s empire. They fight with Soulcatcher, who is one among the Ten Who Were Taken. But the Black Company cannot match the force of the rebels, they are pushed back until the last stand. The fight of the last stand is fought against the rebels and the circle of eighteen.
But nothing was in black and white, nothing was what it seemed. The mechanization between the Lady and the Ten Taken is about to destroy everything. Unless the Black Company steps in.
The story is narrated from the first-person perspective of the croaker, the company's historian, and physician. Croaker takes us deep into the company's history, tells us what makes them tick, the strength that makes them unstoppable and the honor they hold very dear in their hearts.
The characters in this book are very realistic. Even though they are lost early, the reactions to the loss are breathtaking.
The story is captivating with its fast-paced storytelling and gritty realism. The perspective from which the story is told is also quite interesting. The perspective of the Company’s analyst, recording the history of the company. The storytelling perspective gives you the feeling that you are reading from Croak's account.
