1st Grade Emergency Sub Plans - 5 Days No Prep All Subjects Print and Go
Five full days of no-prep, substitute-ready first grade, covering reading, math, writing, word study, science and social studies — every subject the person covering your room has to fill. Each day is two pages: an original nonfiction reading with every answer on the handout, then a math review that checks its own answers, and a find-the-mistake task every student does (word study on Days 2 and 4, editing on Day 5, a science correction on Days 1 and 3). The readings use short first-grade sentences and work read aloud by the substitute or read independently by your stronger readers. The math stays inside first grade: adding and subtracting to 20, missing numbers, and story problems. Nothing needs a device, a textbook, a login, or a teacher who knows the content. You come back to a complete set of answer keys and a class that kept working.
WHAT'S INCLUDED
- Sub & Teacher Notes run sheet (what to hand out each day, what to print, and why the substitute does not need to grade anything)
- 5 days of student work, two pages per day (62 questions total)
- 5 original nonfiction readings written for this packet, one per day
- 5 complete answer keys, one per day
- Single 17-page PDF: run sheet and student pages first (pages 1-11), an "Answer Keys" divider on page 12, then the keys (pages 13-17) -- print pages 1-11 to hand out the whole week without printing the keys
- PDF bookmarks for one-click navigation by day
- US Letter, low-ink, two-sided printable
WHY A SUBSTITUTE CAN ACTUALLY RUN THIS
- Every question can be answered or worked out from the reading on the same handout, so a stuck student re-reads the passage instead of asking the sub a subject question
- Every second page checks itself -- answers pair off, spell out a word or phrase, or fall into a sequence, so a wrong answer is caught by the student, not adjudicated by the sub
- Every day has an "if you finish early" challenge, so nobody runs out of work
- No device, textbook, login, or internet needed
THE 5 DAYS
1. Seeds and Plants, Adding to 20 -- a science reading on how a seed becomes a plant, an addition review, and a writing prompt (14 questions, word decoder)
2. Helpers in Our Town, Word Problems to 20 -- a social studies reading on the fire station, a word-problem review, and word study (12 questions, answer match)
3. Your Five Senses, Missing Numbers -- a science reading on the five senses, a missing-number review, and a writing prompt (13 questions, word decoder)
4. School Long Ago and Today, Putting a Morning in Order -- a social studies reading on the one-room school, a clock-order review, and word study (11 questions, sequence path)
5. Animals of the Night, Subtracting to 20 -- a science reading on night animals, a subtraction review, an editing task, and a wrap-up over the whole week (12 questions, answer match)
Each day stands alone, so they can run in any order or be pulled one at a time.

STANDARDS TOUCHED
CCSS ELA/Literacy grade 1: RI.1.1, RI.1.3 and RI.1.4 on the five readings and their comprehension questions. W.1.8 on the questions themselves, which have the student gather information from a provided source to answer a question. L.1.4.a on the daily vocabulary-in-context question. L.1.1.c on Day 2's singular and plural verb work. L.1.4.b on Day 4's un- and re- word parts. RF.1.1 with L.1.2, L.1.2.a and L.1.2.b on Day 5's editing task, which asks for capitalization, end punctuation and a spelling correction in one rewrite. CCSS Math grade 1: 1.OA.C.6 on Day 1's addition and Day 5's subtraction within 20, 1.OA.A.1 on Day 2's word problems, and 1.OA.D.8 on Day 3's unknown-number equations, plus MP1 on all five self-checking math blocks and MP6 on Day 2. Day 4's clock-ordering block is deliberately left unaligned: it is real practice, but the packet prints no clock face, so it does not carry 1.MD.B.3. Every code above is tied to a specific task in this packet. Nothing is listed that the content does not actually do.
