This is a pdf download of a Foundation Paper Piecing (FPP) quilt block of a fried egg. I made this pattern in Procreate so that I could make an art quilt with a dozen of them all rotated in different directions with different colored yolks. In my quilt I added extra batting under the yolks to make them puff out. This quilt is a statement about how some people in November 2024 used "the price of eggs" as a reason to vote against a woman president and instead voted for the candidate who promised to try to destroy democracy here and abroad. Eggs averaged $3.65 cents per dozen that month, which makes me wonder if that is the price of democracy. My quilt is named "The Price of Democracy" and for each sale of this pattern I will donate $3.65 to the ACLU.

This pattern assumes basic knowledge of foundation paper piecing. The PDF only includes the pattern for the fried egg - whatever you do with that basic block is up to you!

The pattern is meant to be printed on 8.5x11 paper or similar. You can print the black and white one or the colored one - your choice depending on your ink levels. You can print at 100% and end up with an egg block that is 7x7 inches unfinished/6.5x6.5 inches finished, before sashing. (I used 2.5 inch sashing in the example.)

You can also print at 80% or 75% (or larger if you are willing to tape your pieces together) and redraw your 1/4 trim lines.

Thanks, and have fun!
