Installment 67 of Finding the Names, Volume One — The Ship Manifests. Transcribed by hand from the National Archives' own scans of the original New Orleans inward manifests: Record Group 36, Microfilm Publication M1895, Roll 8 ("Inward Manifests, 1837–1841," NAID 173898130), images 601–720.

252 entries (246 named, 6 unnamed) on 60 manifests, all dated 1840.

Inside: the brig Shamrock's seven children shipped under Maryland term-service oaths — free after a term of years, not slaves for life; the ship Seaman's Eliza with her three little children under the same bargain; the brig Chapman twice, three filings to a sailing; the schooner Alexander's eleven bound for Barataria, not New Orleans; Ellen Hyams, whose mistress died in France, certified home by the United States consul at Havre; Esther's sworn affidavit of her journey to Texas and back; Susanna, whose name the examiner corrected to Louisa; and three little girls who each crossed alone on the schooner Elizabeth.

Contents: the book (80 pages, PDF, large print) — About, art by an enslaved creator, the manifests voyage by voyage, the unnamed, an alphabetical name index with image numbers, and honest notes on gaps and disagreements.

Every name is transcribed by hand from the original records. Where a manifest and its certificate disagree, both are printed. Nothing is guessed, and nobody is tidied away. Free — please share, so these names can be found.
