The Intelligencer
The Intelligencer — a scenario generator for the War of the Spanish Succession
Marlborough’s war, at the size of your table.
Pick a campaign — Flanders 1708, the Danube 1704, Valencia 1707, the Upper Rhine 1703, Italy 1706, Aragon 1710 and the French frontier 1712 — and a table, and it builds you an action of that campaign: the ground, both orders of battle, the objectives, the men in command and the reason they are fighting. Villages to storm, redoubts to carry, streams to cross under fire, convoys to bring through. Roll again and you have another.
Six battles from the sources besides — the Schellenberg, Blenheim, Ramillies, Almansa, Oudenarde and Malplaquet — cut into eighteen engagements an evening long, each on its surveyed ground. Blenheim is the specimen: the whole-battle map, and every regiment with the order of battle it stands on.
Every sheet gives you:
the Situation: why both armies are on the field
a staff map in the engraved style, with lettered deployment zones and scored objectives
both orders of battle
the objectives and how the game ends
the balance between the sides, in words, not a score
a card for each commander: who he was, what he had done, and what he can get his army to do in an hour’s fighting
Works with any set of rules for the period. The sheet states the situation; your rules fight it.
Tables of 8, 10, 12 and 14 feet by 6; the forces are cut to the table
Distances in inches or centimetres, for 28 mm or 15 mm figures
