Scene Breakdown | 20 Questions Before Every Scene
Stop guessing what your character is doing. Start asking the questions that make a scene specific.
The TALENTiQ Scene Breakdown is a practical checklist of 20 questions designed to help actors investigate a scene before performing it.
Move beyond simply learning your lines and explore what drives the character, what is at stake and how the scene changes from beginning to end.
The 20 questions cover five areas:
- Given Circumstances: Place, time, recent events and information your character holds.
- The Want: What you want from the other person and why you need it now.
- The Obstacle: External and internal resistance, fear and changing tactics.
- Relationship & Subtext: Shared history, hidden meaning, secrets and status.
- The Shape of the Scene: Turning points, discoveries, transformation and what carries into the next scene.
The questions are designed to be answered in the first person. Short, concrete answers are enough to begin making more specific acting choices.
Who is it for?
Actors working on audition sides, film scenes, theatre scenes or self-tapes who want a repeatable scene-analysis routine.
Use it before rehearsal, while preparing a role or whenever a scene feels unclear.
