The Impossible Atlas™ | Fantasy World Building, Creative Writing & Map Drawing Activity | Grades 6–8
🗺️ THE IMPOSSIBLE ATLAS™
CREATE A WORLD THAT SHOULDN'T EXIST.
What if you could invent a world where absolutely ANYTHING was possible?
A kingdom where nobody is allowed to dream.
An underwater civilisation that has never seen the sun.
A floating city where memories are more valuable than gold.
What would YOUR world look like?
Welcome to The Impossible Atlas™, a creative world-building adventure that challenges learners to become explorers, inventors, mapmakers and storytellers.
Designed for Grades 6–8, this imaginative printable funsheet encourages learners to create an entirely original world — complete with its own geography, inhabitants, unusual rules and hidden secrets.
But there's a twist...
What happens when the most important rule in their world is suddenly broken?
That's when imagination becomes storytelling!
🧭 FIVE CHALLENGES. ONE IMPOSSIBLE WORLD.
01 — THE WORLD MAP
Every extraordinary world begins somewhere.
Learners are given a large, blank mapping space to invent their own world.
They can create mysterious islands, unusual landscapes, impossible cities, unexplored territories and anything else their imaginations can produce.
A map key allows them to identify important locations and landmarks.
02 — THE INHABITANTS
Who lives in this extraordinary place?
Learners invent the people, creatures or beings that inhabit their world.
They consider how these inhabitants have adapted to their unusual surroundings.
03 — THE RULE
Every world operates according to certain rules.
But what if those rules were completely unexpected?
Learners create an unusual law, tradition or system that governs their imaginary world.
They must also consider why the rule exists.
04 — THE SECRET
Every mysterious world has something to hide.
What is the ONE thing outsiders must never discover?
Learners invent a secret that could change everything.
05 — THE IMPOSSIBLE QUESTION
And now comes the challenge that brings the entire world to life!
What would happen if the most important rule in your world was suddenly broken?
Learners imagine the consequences of this event, introducing conflict, cause and effect, and the possibility of an entirely new story.

❤️ WHY TEACHERS WILL LOVE IT
The Impossible Atlas™ gives learners the freedom to create something entirely their own.
Rather than providing a ready-made fantasy world, this activity invites learners to imagine its geography, invent its inhabitants and decide how its society operates.
The final challenge then encourages them to think beyond their initial ideas and consider how one unexpected event could transform everything.
Because the most extraordinary worlds aren't simply discovered. They're imagined.
