Tigran Hamasyan: Off Minor (Live, 2020)
It comes as no surprise that one of the few jazz standards Tigran performs on stage is a composition by Thelonious Monk: while the two musicians certainly possess very different musical languages, they share a common love for rhythm.
In this tune, Tigran doesn't play fancy quintuplets, he mostly stick to regular 8th notes. But make no mistake: his rhythmic placement is insane, and will give you a hard time!
The reharmonization of the tune (GmM7 - F#9 - E9 - Eb9) is great, the polyrhythm where each chord is played for 7/8 (33-35) is fancy and tricky. The solo kinda stick to the chord progression until it doesn't: starting bar 144, it wanders through unexplored territory – but the AABA structure remains!
In short, another masterpiec by Tigran!
