Slab City: "The Last Free Place in America"

Located deep in the harsh Sonoran Desert of southeastern California, Slab City is a sprawling, unregulated squatter community. It takes its name from the concrete slabs that remained after the U.S. government dismantled Camp Dunlap, a World War II Marine Corps training camp, in the 1950s.

Once the military abandoned the site, the empty slabs became a magnet for people looking to disappear or live entirely outside the bounds of conventional society.

Daily Life and Infrastructure

Slab City operates completely off the grid. There is no official local government, no running water, no sewage system, no trash collection, and no electrical grid.

  • The Inhabitants: The population fluctuates drastically. In the brutal summer months, when temperatures soar to 120°F (49°C), only a hardcore group of around 150 permanent residents remains. In the winter, thousands of "snowbirds" arrive in RVs.
  • The Demographics: The community is a volatile, fascinating mix of drifters, anarchists, artists, survivalists, fugitives, impoverished retirees, and outcasts who have either chosen to leave society or were pushed out by it.
  • The Law: While technically owned by the State of California, the state exercises almost no control. It is a true frontier town where residents govern themselves through a mix of informal community rules and sheer isolation.

Key Landmarks

Despite its desolation, Slab City has generated unique, chaotic art and culture:

  • Salvation Mountain: A massive, colorful, visionary art installation made of adobe, straw, and thousands of gallons of lead-free paint, created over decades by local resident Leonard Knight to express his religious faith.
  • East Jesus: An experimental, habitable art installation and sculpture garden made entirely from repurposed trash, discarded materials, and desert detritus.
  • The Range: An open-air stage complete with seating scavenged from old cars and couches, where residents hold weekly music performances under the desert sky.

Slab City represents the ultimate intersection of freedom and desperation, making it a perfect anchor for exploring human resilience on the fringes.

What specific aspects of Slab City’s lawless, off-grid dynamic do you plan to mirror in your fictional "Swingers Island" settlement?
