UNDERSTANDING ME: ANXIETY & OVERWHELM 11+
Interactive Visual Tool + Printable Mind Maps
Help a young person make sense of anxiety, overwhelm and big feelings without asking them to explain everything in one enormous question.
Understanding Me is a gentle interactive visual self-reflection tool for young people aged 11+. It breaks complicated experiences into smaller, more manageable prompts so young people can explore what is happening, what may be contributing to overwhelm, what helps, and what they would like other people to understand.
Ideal for visual thinkers, neurodivergent young people and anyone who finds long worksheets or open-ended questions difficult.
WHAT THIS TOOL CAN HELP EXPLORE
Young people can reflect on:
what anxiety or overwhelm feels like for them
body signals and early warning signs
triggers and patterns
sensory preferences
what happens when they become quiet or withdrawn
what may sit underneath a bigger reaction
what helps them reset
words and responses that feel supportive
what does not help
people they can turn to
how they would like others to check in
what they can manage themselves
what support they may need
small next steps
The aim is not to give a young person the answers.
It is to make the questions easier to see.
INTERACTIVE + VISUAL
The interactive tool includes 13 guided visual mind maps covering anxiety, overwhelm, communication, support and self-understanding.
Young people can:
choose where they want to start
type directly into visual mind maps
work through one question at a time
use a calmer simplified view
save their work and return later
open previously saved reflections
print completed mind maps
save pages as PDFs
build a personal visual snapshot over time
There is no need to complete everything at once.
There are no right or wrong answers.
PRINTABLE SUPPORT
The toolkit also includes printable visual mind-map pages so reflection can happen on screen or on paper.
These can be useful for:
conversations at home
SEND and pastoral support
mentoring
EBSA-related conversations
wellbeing work
individual support
tutoring
counselling or therapeutic conversations
helping a young person prepare what they want to say
WHO IS IT FOR?
Designed for young people aged 11+, particularly those who may experience:
anxiety
overwhelm
big feelings
difficulty explaining what is happening
shutdown or withdrawal
sensory overload
difficulty answering open-ended questions
low confidence around communicating their needs
It may be useful for parents, carers, teachers, SENCOs, tutors and practitioners supporting young people.
WHY VISUAL?
Sometimes:
“How are you feeling?”
is simply too big a question.
Understanding Me turns that big question into smaller visual starting points.
At InclusiveEd, we believe:
A big question is often several smaller questions hiding inside one sentence.
And:
A tool should help someone think — not tell them what to think.
