The Principles of Osteopathy: A Contemporary Study of G. D. Hulett's 1903 Text (Expanded Edition)

Blue Book Series · PCC PRESS · Jiro Yamahata, BCSc., DOMP

In 1903 Guy Dudley Hulett published the first systematic textbook of osteopathic theory. This expanded Contemporary Study takes his work chapter by chapter. It first sets out his arguments faithfully, using quotations checked against the original. It then tests each argument against modern anatomy, physiology, neuroscience and clinical research.

The book shows which of Hulett's ideas have been confirmed, which have been refined and which have been abandoned. These include the self-regulating body, the link between structure and function, palpatory diagnosis, and the principles of direct and indirect technique. The commentary traces the osteopathic lesion through Irvin Korr's facilitated segment to today's concept of somatic dysfunction. Throughout, the book gives close attention to safety, scope of practice and recognising red flags.

Each chapter includes learning objectives, terminology tables and clinical application boxes. It also has a case study, key terms, review questions, critical thinking exercises and further reading. The appendices include a terminology concordance, a historical timeline, a glossary and an expanded bibliography.

Written for students and practitioners of osteopathic manual therapy, it is a foundational companion to the Blue Book technique volumes. It shows why a text more than a century old is still worth reading, and how to read it critically.
