Printable document-based lesson for grades 8–12 on the causes of the Civil War. Twelve primary sources (1820–1861) in Core and Advanced editions of the same documents, with answer keys and a two-lesson plan. PDF plus editable DOCX. Students weigh slavery versus states’ rights using the documents themselves, from the Missouri Compromise to Fort Sumter.

• 12 short primary sources, 1820–1861

• Two levels of the same sources: Core (grades 8–10) and Advanced (grades 10–12), so a mixed class can discuss the same evidence

• Two-lesson plan, cited timeline, and glossary

• Answer keys for both levels; Advanced includes a DBQ-style marking guide

• Print-ready PDF and editable DOCX

• Every excerpt cited to its published source with a link; content notes sit above sensitive passages

How this was made: AI tools helped draft the context notes, questions, and answer keys, and helped find and format the excerpts. Every quotation was checked word for word against the cited source text. The historical documents are public-domain originals, not AI-generated. Preview images come from the actual pack pages; no AI images are used.

Content note: Sources 5 and 9 each defend slavery and treat enslaved people as property. Each full document also expresses openly racist views. Source 8 defends slavery: it complains that Northern states opposed slavery and would not return people who escaped it. Source 7 blames anti-slavery Northerners for the crisis. They are included as historical evidence, not as an endorsement. Please preview them before assigning.

Teacher guidance: do not ask students to read these passages aloud in character or to role-play their authors. Discuss them as evidence: who wrote this, for whom, and why.

The pages around Source 9 in the 1861 journal state openly racist views. Both editions print only the passage chosen here. If you show students the full declaration, preview it first.

Sources 5, 8 and 9 are in both editions, each with its content note directly above the excerpt. Core prints one sentence of each: for Source 5, the Court's holding. The Dred Scott opinion also contains a widely quoted racist passage; it is not printed in this pack.

The documents mostly speak for white officials and politicians. Frederick Douglass (Source 3) is the only voice of a person who had been enslaved. The Stretch task and class talk can ask whose voices are missing.
