Kindergarten Emergency Sub Plans - 5 Days No Prep All Subjects Print and Go
Five full days of substitute-ready kindergarten covering reading, math, writing, word study, science and social studies. Each day is two pages: a short nonfiction reading the substitute reads aloud, six questions the children answer by circling and writing one word, a math review that checks its own answers, and a find-the-mistake task. This is a read-aloud packet, and the run sheet says so: the readings use kindergarten sentences of about six words, and the substitute reads each one aloud twice while children follow along. Every answer is a circle, a copied word, or a number, so a child who is not yet reading independently can still do the whole page. The math stays inside adding and taking away within 10. Nothing needs a device, a textbook, a login, or a teacher who knows the content. You come back to a complete set of answer keys and a class that kept working.
WHAT'S INCLUDED
- Sub & Teacher Notes run sheet (what to hand out each day, what to print, and why the substitute does not need to grade anything)
- 5 days of student work, two pages per day (56 questions total)
- 5 original nonfiction readings written for this packet, one per day
- 5 complete answer keys, one per day
- Single 17-page PDF: run sheet and student pages first (pages 1-11), an "Answer Keys" divider on page 12, then the keys (pages 13-17) -- print pages 1-11 to hand out the whole week without printing the keys
- PDF bookmarks for one-click navigation by day
- US Letter, low-ink, two-sided printable
WHY A SUBSTITUTE CAN ACTUALLY RUN THIS
- Every question can be answered or worked out from the reading on the same handout, so a child who is stuck just needs to hear the passage again -- the sub never has to answer a subject question
- Every second page checks itself -- answers pair off, spell out a word or phrase, or fall into a sequence, so a wrong answer is caught by the student, not adjudicated by the sub
- Every day has an "if you finish early" challenge, so nobody runs out of work
- No device, textbook, login, or internet needed
THE 5 DAYS
1. Baby Animals, Adding to 10 -- a science reading on baby animals and their parents, an adding review, and a draw-and-write prompt (11 questions, word decoder)
2. Rules at School, Story Problems -- a social studies reading on classroom rules, story problems to 10, and word study on the -s ending (11 questions, answer match)
3. Weather and What We Wear, Taking Away -- a science reading on weather and clothing, a taking-away review, and a draw-and-write prompt (12 questions, word decoder)
4. Families, Putting a Day in Order -- a social studies reading on families, putting a family day in order, and word study on question words (11 questions, sequence path)
5. Float and Sink, Adding and Taking Away -- a science reading on what floats and what sinks, a mixed math review, an editing task, and a wrap-up over the whole week (11 questions, answer match)
Each day stands alone, so they can run in any order or be pulled one at a time.

STANDARDS TOUCHED
CCSS ELA/Literacy kindergarten: RI.K.1 and RI.K.4 on the five readings and their comprehension questions, both read with the 'with prompting and support' clause the standards themselves carry at this grade - the run sheet directs the substitute to read each passage and each question aloud. RI.K.3 on ONE comparison question each day, where two facts from different parts of the reading have to be put together, not on all ten inferential questions. W.K.8 on the questions themselves, which have the child gather information from a provided source to answer a question. L.K.4.a on Day 5's sink item, where the passage teaches a second meaning for a word the child already knows. L.K.1.d on Day 4's who / what / where question words. RF.K.1.c with L.K.2.a and L.K.2.b on Day 5's editing task, which asks for a word space, a capital letter at the start, and the NAME of the end mark. CCSS Math kindergarten: K.OA.A.2 on Day 1's addition, Day 3's subtraction and the story problems on Days 2 and 5 - every item within 10 - plus MP1 on all five self-checking second pages, each of which tells the child to go back and find their own error rather than ask an adult. TWO THINGS ARE DELIBERATELY LEFT UNALIGNED, because a code left off silently reads the same as an oversight. Day 4's put-the-day-in-order block is real practice, but kindergarten has no time-telling standard at all, so it carries none. Day 2's -s word study is real practice too, and it also carries none: the standard that describes it (L.K.1.c) says 'orally', which a printed packet cannot evidence, and the affix standard next to it (L.K.4.b) is about unknown words, which cat and hand are not. Every code above is tied to a specific task in this packet. Nothing is listed that the content does not actually do.
