I'm Bound To Ride

Banjo Tab PDF + TEF

2 versions: Stanley Brothers version and Jim Mills version

This tab is based on Ralph Stanley's playing on the 1964 King Records version of "I'm Bound To Ride" by the Stanley Brothers. The tab covers both of Ralph's breaks. Also included are the 4 different licks that he plays between the vocal phrases "Honey babe, I'm bound to ride" and "Don't you wanna go".

As a bonus, you get a tab for Jim Mills' opening and closing breaks on his 1998 recording of "Bound To Ride" featuring Ricky Skaggs on the lead vocal.

Compare the chord progressions. The same song has two different chord progressions. Keep this in mind when you're playing songs at a jam: which version of a particular song are you going to play? It may sound like someone is playing the "wrong" chords, but they may have learned the song from a different recording than the one you used. Be open-minded and discuss the differences and then make sure everyone's on board with the version the song leader has called.

To listen to both versions of "I'm Bound To Ride" click the arrow on the banjo image at top of page to reveal the song posted on YouTube.
