Kiddo asked for a beanie and, of course, I jumped at the opportunity to hook one up for him! He helped me design this one and gave input on the construction, cable, and brim - and I made it for him exactly as he wished.

The pattern is intended to provide you with the instructions to make a beanie exactly as you wish - with 9 sizes plus notes for other sizes and gauges, instructions for adding more cables, and info on adjusting the brim and body to fit.

This is an intermediate level pattern because of the cabling, but if you’re familiar with post stitches, crossed stitches, and/or if you’ve done a cable in the past, it’ll be a breeze to work up and adjust on the go.

Sample used Zen Yarn Garden Serenity DK, 175yds/70g in Midnight Blue to create a Child size

Gauge

Gauge swatch is worked in the round and measurements are taken after blocking. Do not stretch the fabric when checking gauge. If you don’t want to get gauge, follow the adjustment notes throughout the pattern to work the beanie to size. Differences in gauge will change the finished size and will also impact the yardage required.

Yarn, Yardage, and Colors

  • For size Preemie (Newborn, Baby), 50 (83, 126)yds/45 (76, 115)m/20 (33, 50)g of DK weight yarn
  • For size Toddler (Child, Teen), 166 (200, 236)yds/152 (182, 216)m/66 (80, 94)g of DK weight yarn
  • For size Adult S (Adult M, Adult L), 275 (333, 430)yds/252 (304, 390)m/110 (133, 170)g of DK weight yarn
I recommend a base and color that will show off the cables - the cables will likely be obscured with too much texture. Laceweight will result in a very narrow cable, for the smallest sizes a bulky or thicker will result in a cable that takes up most of the beanie. Other than that, the beanie can be customized to work with any weight.

Sizes

The brim is designed to have approximately 2”/5cm of negative ease for a snug fit, and the ribbing will stretch to fit comfortably when worn. If you prefer a looser beanie, work one size up or add extra sts by following the customization notes.

For best results, take measurements rather than relying on size. Head Circumference is the size the beanie will fit; brim circumference is the actual measurement of the beanie.
  • Fits size Preemie (newborn, Baby) with a head circumference of 12”/31cm (14”/36cm, 16”/41cm) and a brim circumference of 10”/26cm (12”/31cm, 14”/36cm)
  • Fits size Toddler (Child, Teen) with a head circumference of 18”/46cm (19”/49cm, 20”/51cm) and a brim circumference of 16”/41cm (17”/44cm, 18”/46cm)
  • Fits size Adult S (Adult M, Adult L) with a head circumference of 21”/54cm (23”/59cm, 25”/64cm) and a brim circumference of 19”/49cm (21”/54cm, 23”/59cm)

Customizations

Wider/narrower circumference; wider/narrower brim; longer/shorter beanie; additional cables

Skills Required

ch, sc, dc, hdc, bp/fp, hdc2tog, crossed dc, simple cabling, working in the round

Construction

The beanie is worked in one piece, from the bottom up. The brim is worked in the round and the body is worked directly from the brim without fastening off. The beanie is worked in a continuous spiral so there’s no seam.

Screen Reader Compatibility

The main pattern pdf is designed to be screen reader compatible. The text is all in one column and headers are formatted according to the style sheet. The pattern is written out completely and the images have descriptive alt text. Size information is provided in a table, but is also listed in text form.

Please note that the pattern has multiple sizes. When relevant, instructions for larger sizes are given in parentheses, which may make it more challenging to follow with a screen reader. . There are 9 sizes in total and the pattern will be formatted, for example, so that it reads as sc 5 (10, 15) 20 (25, 30) 35 (40, 50). With that said, the pattern is written to minimize the numbers within the instructions - the numbers are mostly the st counts at the end of the row - and you can follow the customization notes rather than following the numbers.
