VOLUME FOUR

There is a Key to the Bottomless Pit

(Who goes to Heaven?)

In Volume One we did a study on who goes to Heaven; Only Christians? And we looked at what Jesus has to say about that.

In Volume Two we discussed if faith alone will get you into Heaven and what ‘evil in the sight of the Lord’ (mentioned 50+ times in the Bible) means. We also mention all the keys that will be discussed in this nine volume series of ‘Who Goes to Heaven.’

In Volume Three we mentioned the ‘open door promise,’ from the holder of the key of David for a select group of people.

In this Volume (Four) we'll have a look at the Key of the Bottomless Pit. This is the only key that is not carried by Jesus.

Are all Christians saints?

Many Christians adopt the title ‘saint’ and believe that a throne is waiting for them in heaven.

Is this true according to the Bible?

Volume Four of ‘Who Goes to Heaven?’ will show light on these assumptions.

What is the Bottomless Pit?

The Bottomless Pit is also known as the Abyss (Greek) and is a place of confinement for demons/evil spirits/fallen angels, specifically those who followed Satan, until they are judged and thrown into the Lake of Fire.

The Pit is depicted as a source of smoke and darkness, chaos and evil.

It's a temporary holding place for demons before their ultimate destination.

What is hell?

The term ‘Hell’ in the KJV Bible translates from several words in the original Hebrew and Greek, including ‘Sheol (Hebrew),’ ‘Hades (Greek),’ ‘Gehenna,’ and ‘Tartarus’. Generally, it refers to the place of the dead or the realm of the wicked. In Luke 16:23, for instance, the rich man is depicted as being in Hell, experiencing torment.

Hell is thus a place for the souls of the deceased who are separated from God. It’s a temporary state awaiting the final judgment, after which the wicked are cast into the Lake of Fire.

What is the Lake of Fire?

The ‘Lake of Fire’ is a term that appears in Revelation 19:20 and 20:10, 14-15. This is where the beast and the false prophet are cast and is referred to as the second death.

Unlike the Bottomless Pit, the Lake of Fire represents the final judgment and eternal punishment for the devil, his angels, and the wicked.

The Lake of Fire is distinct from Hell in that it is the final destination after the final judgment.

While Hell (or Hades) is often viewed as a temporary place for the dead, the Lake of Fire symbolises the eternal state of punishment after the final judgment.

As we continue it will help to remember that the Bottomless Pit represents a temporary hold for evil. Hell is the current abode of the dead, separated from God. The Lake of Fire represents eternal judgment and punishment, and each one serves a different purpose.

Biblical scholars may differ a little on the various terms mentioned, however above I gave a broad guideline which we can follow to understand the following Scripture verses.

About the woes

There are three woes in Revelation. The first woe, described in Revelation 9, is connected to the Bottomless Pit, also known as the Abyss.

This woe involves a star falling from heaven and being given the key to the Bottomless Pit, which then releases locusts to torment people.

These locusts have the appearance of horses and are commanded by the angel of the Bottomless Pit.

There’s a whole lot of stuff happening in the Book of Revelation but in this Volume Four of ‘Who Goes To Heaven?, we’ll specifically address the key of the Bottomless Pit. The Bottomless Pit is mentioned in Revelation 9, 11, 17 and 20. I mention this so that you can look it up for yourself.

The Abyss is mentioned in connection with the judgments of the trumpet calls in Revelation 9 and the binding of Satan in Revelation 20.

Evil spirits

Evil spirits … Bottomless Pit

Then Jesus asked him,

“What is your name?”

“Legion!” he replied.

For many evil spirits had gone into him,

and were now begging Jesus

not to order them off to the Bottomless Pit.

Evil spirits expected that Jesus would send them to the Bottomless Pit.

By the sound of it, the Bottomless Pit is all kinds of scary. An angel called Abbadon (the destroyer) has the key to the Bottomless Pit.

This angel is king over terrifying locusts which rise up out of the pit tormenting people.

The devil and his cronies end up in the pit… demons… you name it.

We’ll go through the Scripture verses relating to the Bottomless Pit as they appear in order in Revelation, the last book of the Bible.

The verse starts with a star falling from heaven to whom was given the key of the Bottomless Pit.

....

Without The Seal of God

Key of the Bottomless Pit

Men which have not the seal of God ( Revelation 9:1-6)

  • Men which have not the seal of God
  • And the fifth angel sounded,
  • and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth:
  • and to him was given
  •  the key of the Bottomless Pit.
  •  And he opened the Bottomless Pit;
  • and there arose a smoke out of the pit,
  • as the smoke of a great furnace;
  • and the sun and the air were darkened
  • because of the smoke of the pit.

  • And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power,
  • as the scorpions of the earth have power.
  • And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing,
  • neither any tree;
  • but only those men which have
  • not the seal of God in their foreheads.

  •  And in those days shall men seek death,
  • and shall not find it;
  • and shall desire to die,
  • and death shall flee from them.
  •  Revelation 9:1-6

We’re reading here about those of us who won’t go to heaven; people who don’t have God’s seal in their foreheads.

Who are the people with God’s seal in their foreheads?

For the answer we’ll have to go back to Revelation 7 and find the following,
